Maddie Frederick, a 6-foot senior from Tippecanoe High School who moved into the Miami County community last summer, brought home the highest honor today, as she was voted the Ohio Division 2 co-Player of the Year by a panel of sportswriters from each district across the state.

Frederick shared the award with Naz Hillmon from Gilmour Academy as the all-Ohio girls’ basketball teams were released today from Division 1 and 2. The selections were made by members of the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association, taking over from the AP which has done it for years.

Frederick averaged 15.8 points per game for the Red Devils, along with 4.6 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.2 steals, and earned Player of the Year honors at every level. Frederick will be suiting up for Iowa State next basketball season.

“I am completely honored and humbled to be recognized as Co-player of the Year,” Frederick said. “Having recently relocated to Ohio, I had no idea what the season may hold, but the honor of being selected to the All Ohio First Team as well as Co-player of the Year is beyond my expectations.”

Frederick had to adjust to a new environment, and she felt is has prepared her for the next stage in her career, the collegiate level.

“The support I have received from the fans here in Tipp City is unbelievable,” she said. “It has given me a taste as to what to expect as I enter the next chapter of my life and head to Ames, Iowa. There were many transitions this year, not only to a new school and team, but also a new style of play. The opportunities I have been given to grow as a player and a person will only benefit in my future endeavors.”

Another Dayton-area player who received first-team all-Ohio honors in Division 2 was Trotwood Madison 6-foot-3 senior Shai McGruder, who finished the season at 25.9 points, 9.5 rebounds, 5.3 steals and 2.4 blocks. McGruder will be attending the University of New Mexico next season.

“When Shai enrolled at Trotwood last Fall, her and I had a conversation that I have with all my players about team and personal goals,” said Trotwood coach Hank Benton. “This meeting revealed to me the impact that Shai would have with her new team mates on and off the court. Shai brought into our philosophy about defense, quickly realizing that her basketball talents would make our defensive pressure tough and allow her to enjoy her offensive strengths in the process.”

“I’ve been blessed to have coach such a great player (person), but I can’t take credit for her success, being that I only coach her for one year. At the end of the day Shai has helped elevate our program and set the bar high for our underclassmen to follow.”

Joining those two on first-team all-Ohio was Lilly Ritz, Cambridge; Aaliyah Currence, New Philadelphia; Casey Smith, Pepper Pike Orange; Dayshanette Harris, Youngstown Ursuline; Robin Campbell, Alliance Marlington; Zia Cooke, Toledo Rogers; Casey Santoro, Bellevue; and Hillmon.

Named to the second-team from the area was Hunter Stidham, a senior from Valley View along with area third-team junior Layne Ferrell, a 6-foot-1 wing from Franklin High School.

*Two Cincinnati-area players landed on the Division 1 first-team, as senior Abby Prochaska from Lakota West and Mason High School junior Sammie Puisis were among the ten kids selected to the top group.

Wilmington junior Mya Jackson was named to the second-team, while receiving enough votes for the third team included Jordan Diehl, a senior from Springboro and Tecumseh High School junior Corinne Thomas.
