Nikki Current of Ben Logan was named Division 3 co-Player of the Year in Ohio

By Jim Dabbelt

Benjamin Logan senior Nikki Current capped off her successful career today by being named the Ohio Division 3 co-Player of the Year, as the all-Ohio teams are being released this week. The Division 3 and 4 teams were announced tonight, while Division 1 and 2 will be released on Tuesday evening, with Ohio Ms. Basketball crowned on Wednesday night.

The all-Ohio teams were selected by a panel of sportswriters from each district in Ohio, in conjunction with the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association. The Associated Press no longer is involved with the statewide selections.

Current finished her career with over 2,000 points, becoming the only player in Logan County history, boys or girls, to surpass that mark. She averaged 26.0 points per game for the Raiders, along with 7.2 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 7.1 steals per game, while she shot 50.2% from the field and 80.1% from the free throw line.

“I couldn’t be happier to receive this prestigious award,” Current said. “It is an incredible honor as there are so many talented players in the state of Ohio. I can’t think my teammates, coaches, and family enough for everything they have done for me these past 4 years.”

She also holds 11 individual records at Ben Logan, and is part of 11 team records. She was a four-time first-team selection in the Central Buckeye Conference including three-time Player of the Year, three-time District 9 first-team, and on a district level, Current was first-team Southwest District the last three years, and three-time all-Ohio player.

“I’ll never forget this season, all the Benjamin Logan fans coming up to me after each game to show their support meant a lot to me,” Current added. “I’m excited for the next chapter in my life, but I know I am going to miss Ben Logan because of all the great memories and dedicated fans that I hope will come watch me play at whatever college I decide to attend.”

Springfield Northeastern senior Hayley Suchland, who led Southwest Ohio in scoring regardless of division, joined Current on the Division 3 all-Ohio first-team. She averaged 30.9 points, 8.3 rebounds and 4.7 steals per game while shooting 40% from the field, 75% from the line and 36% from the three. She scored a Dayton-area high 49 points in their season opener this season.

Also named to the Division 3 all-Ohio first-team was Kennedy Schlabach of Berlin Hiland, Jordan Horston of Columbus Africentric, Isabelle Kline of Newton Falls, Kadie Kempfling of Ottawa-Glandorf, Savannah Richards of Liberty Benton, Ella Skeens of Chillicothe Southeastern, Emily Chapman of Proctorville Fairland and Sydney Snyder. Horston was also named co-Player of the Year with Current.

Versailles’ senior Kami McEldowney was named second-team all-Ohio along with Rachel Murray, a junior from Waynesville. Landing on the special mention was Morgan Haney, a junior at Miami East.

* In Division 4, Newton senior Tatum McBride and Cedarville senior Ise Bolender were both honored as first-team all-Ohio players.

McBride averaged 21.1 points per game for the Indians, as she has led her team to a 72-25 career record and four straight winning seasons. Previously in school history, Newton had three winning seasons. She also averaged 4.4 assists per game and 4.1 steals, and finished her career with 1,576 career points, and will leave Newton with 14 school records.

“Being on the first-team has always been a dream of mine,” McBride said. “To finally accomplish it at the end of my high school career is very special.”

“It’s the perfect way to end my high school career. I couldn’t have gotten this recognition without a successful team and coach so to just get this type of closing on my career feels good.”

Bolender averaged 20.2 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game, and was named to the District 9 coaches team all four years with the Indians. Bolender finished her career with just shy of 2,000 points in her career.

Also on the first-team were Kelsi Hunt of Malvern, Makenna Geiser of Dalton, Katie Hiestand of Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas, Jenna Karl of Buckeye Central, Bridget Landin of Ottoville, Alli Kern of Waterford, Megan Ball of Waterford, and Celeste Mershimer of Fairfield Christian.

Listed on second-team was Samantha Whiteman, a 5-7 junior at Covington and Courtney Prenger, a 6-foot-2 junior at Minster.

Rising sophomore Aubrey Stupp at Tri-County North was selected third-team all-Ohio.
